Jebel Shams (mountain of sun) is a mountain located in northeastern Oman north of Al Hamra town. It is the highest mountain of the country and the region with about 3000m. It is a popular sightseeing area located 240 km from Muscat and can also be reached in a one day trip from the UAE. In the summer, temperature is around 20°C so perfect for camping or hiking when it gets to hot in the cities.
The hike starts from the high plateau of the mountain and runs along the steep cliffs to a old hidden village. The path is clearly marked after the start and most of the time away from the steep drops of several hundred meters. Only in a few sections, it gets close to the edge, so if you hike with kids, stick to the trails.
