Wakeboarding
Wakeboarding is the result of mixing water skiing, snow boarding and surfing. It requires a wakeboard, a rider, a rope and a boat. The rider is towed behind the boat which is running at a speed suitable for the rider’s comfort and experience. (the most common speed is 20-25 knots, which is enough to get you out of the water)
This water sport can be practiced on almost every wide water surface and not only on the sea, also on a calm river or a lake with a boat, ski jet or, in some special designated areas, pulled by a cable system. In the UAE the friendly waters of the sea are a great environment for all water sports including wakeboarding. So there are a lot of perfect places along the beautiful coast of the UAE for practicing wakeboarding. You can see, in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or in the impressive Fujairah, riders riding a wakeboard and splashing the water like a humming top. Of course some are professionals and some of them are controlling the wakeboard with the precision and the finesse of a polar bear. But if they love It, then we love it! Everybody has a unique style. If you are a beginner it is strongly recommended to practice it with an expert, until you catch the knack of things, because just like any other water sport it can be dangerous. There are no special regulations regarding this water sport and excluding the harbors or some creeks, there are no other forbidden areas as long as you maintain some distance from the shore, from the busy beaches or from the breakwaters. As we mentioned, in the UAE, this sport is quite widely practiced and there are enough water sport clubs which provide wakeboarding equipment and/or classes for it. Almost all of the hotels from the coast line have it included in their recreational programs. You will find in this chapter all the details about wakeboarding and the places you can do it. Don’t forget to wear a life jacket!
